Why French Drains Fail Within Two Years

I get called out to look at failed French drains more than almost any other complaint, and the pattern is depressingly consistent. Someone had a wet spot, a landscaper or handyman dug a trench, dropped in some perforated pipe, backfilled it, and the wet spot came back within eighteen months to two years. The homeowner assumes French drains do not work. Usually the drain was just built wrong.
A French drain is not a complicated piece of engineering. It is a trench, a perforated pipe, and gravel, arranged so water can enter the pipe from below the surface and travel somewhere else by gravity. The concept has worked for well over a century. The failures are almost always in the execution, not the idea.
The gravel is usually the first thing done wrong
A French drain needs clean, washed gravel with no fines, meaning no sand or silt mixed in. Fines migrate through the gravel over time and clog the void spaces the water is supposed to move through, along with the perforations in the pipe itself. I have dug up failed drains where the "gravel" used was closer to a crusher run with a lot of dust and small particles in it, because it was cheaper and the person doing the work did not know the difference mattered.
The other common shortcut is skipping the filter fabric that wraps around the gravel bed. That fabric keeps the surrounding native soil from migrating into the gravel from the sides and top. Without it, especially in silty or clay-heavy soil, the drain can silt itself shut from the outside in within a couple of wet seasons, long before anyone notices anything is wrong because the surface still looks fine.
The outlet is the part nobody checks
A French drain only works if the water it collects has somewhere to actually go. That means a daylight outlet at a lower elevation than the trench, discharging onto a slope, into a dry well, or into a storm system where that is legal. I have found drains that dead-ended into nothing, buried under a later landscaping project, or outlets that were pointed at a spot that was not actually lower than the trench once the yard settled over a few years.
If you already have a drain you suspect is failing, the outlet is the first place to check, and it takes five minutes. Pour a few buckets of water into the highest point of the trench and go watch the outlet. If nothing comes out within a reasonable time, the problem is downstream of where the water enters, not upstream.
Pushing back on "just add more drains"
The common advice when a drain does not solve a wet yard is to add a second drain, or a catch basin, or extend the existing trench further. Sometimes that is correct. Often it is treating a symptom instead of the cause. In a fair number of the wet yards I have inspected, the actual problem was upstream of where anyone was digging: a finish grade that sloped the wrong way, a downspout dumping directly next to the foundation instead of being piped away, or a neighboring property's regrade sending extra runoff onto the lot.
A French drain intercepts water that is already moving through the soil. It does very little for water that is arriving on the surface faster than the soil can absorb it. Before adding a second trench, I always want to know whether the actual issue is subsurface water or surface runoff, because those two problems get fixed in completely different ways, and a drain aimed at the wrong one just means a second failure a year later.
What a drain that actually lasts looks like

A properly built trench, checked every three to five years to clear the outlet of debris, can genuinely run twenty to thirty years. That is not a marketing number, it is roughly what I have seen hold up on drains I have inspected that were built correctly the first time.
When a French drain is not actually the right fix
If the wet spot shows up specifically during and right after storms rather than gradually over days, that usually points to surface runoff and a grading problem rather than subsurface water, and no amount of trenching will fully solve it. In that case, the fix is closer to correcting the slope so water leaves the area on the surface before it ever gets the chance to soak in. It is also worth understanding how a freshly graded slope can fail if the drainage plan and the grading plan were never actually coordinated, which happens more often than either trade wants to admit. And if you are planning any new drainage work, check whether it needs a permit before the trench goes in, since some municipalities regulate where you are allowed to discharge water onto a neighboring property.
