Rip Rap Versus Erosion Blankets on a Steep Bank

Somewhere between "put down some straw" and "cover the whole bank in boulders" sits the actual decision most people need to make about a freshly graded slope, and the two real options in that middle ground are rip rap and erosion control blankets. I get asked to choose between them constantly, usually right after someone has finished a regrade and is looking at bare soil with rain in the forecast.

What each one actually is

Rip rap is loose, angular rock, typically ranging from fist sized to well over a foot across depending on how much water energy it needs to resist, placed over a slope to physically absorb the force of moving water and prevent the soil underneath from washing away. It is permanent, heavy, and does not rely on vegetation to work.

An erosion control blanket is a mat, usually made of straw, coconut fiber, or a synthetic mesh, staked directly into the slope over grass seed. It works by physically holding the soil in place and slowing water velocity across the surface just long enough for vegetation to establish roots, at which point the roots themselves become the long term erosion control and the blanket breaks down or becomes irrelevant.

The factor that actually decides which one you need

The single biggest factor is how much water energy the slope will actually see, not how steep it looks. A steep bank with light, infrequent runoff can often be stabilized with a blanket and vegetation. A much gentler slope that happens to be positioned to catch concentrated flow, say, from a swale, a downspout, or runoff funneling down from a larger area above it, needs rip rap regardless of the actual grade angle, because vegetation alone cannot resist concentrated, high velocity water no matter how well established the roots are.

I look at three things before recommending either: the slope angle itself, whether the water hitting that slope is sheet flow spread across a wide area or concentrated flow funneled into a narrower path, and how long the area needs to hold before vegetation can realistically establish, which depends heavily on season and climate. A blanket installed in late fall in a cold climate is fighting a much longer window before grass roots actually take hold than the same blanket installed in spring.

Pushing back on "always use rip rap to be safe"

A fair number of contractors default to rip rap on any slope steeper than about 3 to 1, meaning three feet of horizontal distance for every one foot of vertical rise, treating it as the safe universal answer. I understand the instinct, since rip rap essentially never fails from lack of strength, but I think this defaults people into more cost and a worse looking result than necessary on a lot of residential slopes that would hold up fine with a well installed blanket and the right seed mix.

Rip rap on a 3 to 1 slope with only moderate, sheet flow runoff is often overkill, and it is expensive: delivered and placed rock can run several times the cost per square foot of a blanket and seed installation. I have talked more than one client out of a rip rap quote by walking the site with them after a rainstorm and showing them that the water crossing that particular slope was moving slowly and spread wide, not funneling into a channel, which is exactly the situation a blanket handles well.

What happens if you choose wrong

The failure mode for each is different and worth knowing before you pick. A blanket that is undersized for the actual water flow will tear or wash out, usually during the first significant storm, exposing bare soil right at the point it was most vulnerable. Rip rap that is undersized, meaning the rock itself is too small for the water velocity, will get displaced and rolled downslope, sometimes ending up in a drainage channel it was meant to protect, which can create its own blockage problem.

Both failures tend to happen fast and are expensive to fix after the fact compared to sizing the original installation correctly, which is really an argument for getting the water flow assessment right at the start rather than picking a stabilization method based on the slope's appearance alone.

Getting the slope itself right first

Neither erosion control method fixes a slope that was graded incorrectly in the first place. If you are still in the planning stage, it is worth reading about why freshly graded slopes fail before vegetation ever gets a chance, since a lot of erosion control failures actually trace back to a grading decision made weeks earlier, not the stabilization method itself. If drainage is concentrating water onto this slope from somewhere else on the property, that is often better solved at the source, which is covered in how grading directs water across a whole lot rather than only at the point where it is causing visible damage.
