Both are right for different jobs, and picking the wrong one for a small residential lot wastes either time or money, sometimes both.
What each machine is actually built to do
A skid steer is fundamentally a material handling machine with grading capability, not the other way around. Its strength is versatility: swap a bucket for a grader attachment, a pallet fork, an auger, or a set of tracks with a rotating brush, and it does a dozen different jobs across a project. On flat to moderately sloped ground, a skid steer with a grading attachment can produce a reasonably smooth finish grade, especially with a laser guided attachment.
A small dozer, by contrast, is built specifically to push, cut, and shape earth. Its blade, ground pressure distribution, and lower center of gravity make it far more capable on actual slope work, and it moves larger volumes of soil per pass than a skid steer generally can. What it does not do well is the material handling versatility a skid steer offers, since a dozer is essentially a one job machine.
Where lot size and access change the answer
On a small urban or suburban lot, access is often the deciding factor before capability even enters the conversation. A skid steer's compact footprint and tighter turning radius let it work in backyards and side yards that a small dozer, even a compact one, simply cannot maneuver in without repeatedly repositioning. If your lot has a six foot side yard between the house and a fence, that reality alone may settle the decision regardless of which machine would otherwise be better suited to the grading itself.
On a larger lot with genuine slope work, meaning cutting a hillside, building a significant fill section, or moving volumes well beyond a couple hundred cubic yards, a dozer's efficiency advantage becomes hard to ignore. What takes a skid steer a full day of repeated passes, a dozer with the right blade can often accomplish in a fraction of the time, because it is simply built for that specific task.
Pushing back on "rent whichever is cheaper per day"
Rental rates for a skid steer typically run lower per day than a small dozer, and I understand the temptation to let that number drive the decision on a budget conscious project. I think this is the wrong way to compare the two, because the relevant cost is not the daily rate, it is the total project cost including how many days the rental actually takes to finish the job and how much rework is needed afterward.
A skid steer forced to do dozer scale earthwork on a sloped lot will take considerably longer, and the finish quality on real slope work tends to be rougher, sometimes requiring a follow up pass with better equipment anyway. I have seen homeowners spend more in total rental days on an underpowered machine than they would have spent on two days with the correctly sized one.

What operator experience actually changes
Neither machine is intuitive the first time you climb into the seat, but the learning curve is not the same. A skid steer's joystick controls take an hour or two to get comfortable with on flat ground, and most first time operators can do reasonably useful work within a day, even if the finish quality is not yet as clean as an experienced hand's. A dozer's blade control, by contrast, rewards feel in a way that is harder to shortcut. Reading how much material a blade is actually carrying, judging when to angle it versus float it, and keeping a consistent grade across repeated passes takes longer to develop, and a first time dozer operator on real slope work is far more likely to leave a rougher surface than an experienced one would, sometimes rough enough that a second pass with better technique is needed just to correct it.
This matters for a homeowner deciding whether to operate a rented machine themselves or hire it out. On a skid steer doing straightforward material moving or a light regrade, a careful first timer can usually produce acceptable results. On a dozer doing real slope shaping, I generally recommend hiring an experienced operator rather than learning on your own property, because the mistakes are more expensive to fix and, on a steep or unstable slope, genuinely more dangerous to make while still learning the controls.
What actually determines the right choice
Answer three questions honestly before you rent or hire either one. How much material is actually moving, in cubic yards, not a guess. How steep is the ground you are working on, checked with a level rather than eyeballed. And how tight is your access, measured in feet at the narrowest point the machine has to pass through. Those three numbers, more than brand loyalty or what a neighbor used, tell you which machine fits the job.
If you are still working out the volume of earthwork involved, it helps to understand how cut and fill numbers actually get calculated before committing to either machine, since a project that looks small from the surface can involve far more material once the actual cut and fill volumes are worked out. And if the job is smaller than either of these machines really justifies, it may be worth reading what a mini excavator can and cannot handle first, since a fair number of small residential jobs are better suited to an excavator than either a skid steer or a dozer.
